Ziggy arrives at Rose FarmZiggy was sad; he had lived at the zoo for as long as he could remember. He didn’t have any close friends except for Harry the Hawk. Harry was free—he could come and go as he pleased—but Ziggy was stuck, locked up in a very small yard.One day, Harry told him about a nice farm in the country. This made Ziggy want to leave even more. Harry was clever; he had very good eyesight and knew when the zookeeper was away. He told Ziggy that he would get the monkeys to help open the gates, and then Ziggy could escape.The country train line wasn’t very far. Harry led the way up and down streets, through the park, and past the soccer field. There was the train, waiting at the platform.Harry’s eyes spotted a train ticket on the ground. He swooped down and picked it up in his beak. He gave it to Ziggy, and with a grin, Ziggy jumped on the train. He was suddenly free.Harry promised he would meet him at the Bunyip station. Ziggy thought, I don’t know where Bunyip is, but that sounds interesting, and the farm will be nice too.The train chugged on and on, town after town. Ziggy was excited. He wondered if the farm had apple trees and places where he could run free.The train pulled into a station, and a voice said, “This is Bunyip. Please take all your belongings and be careful getting off the train. Thank you for travelling with us.”Ziggy got off the train and looked around. First, he saw a funny-looking fellow. The funny-looking fellow came toward him.“Don’t worry! My name is Henry, and I am here to welcome you to Bunyip. My friend Tony the Turtle has his truck, and he’s going to take us down the hill to Rose Farm. The gang are eager to meet you, and we really hope you like sticky buns and cups of tea.”Well, Ziggy had never had a cup of tea or even a sticky bun, but as he was a visitor, he didn’t say anything except a shy, “Thank you.”The red truck, Tony, and a very tired Harry the Hawk were waiting in the car park, and once settled, off they went down the hill.Ziggy thought that this town looked very nice. They drove past the bakery, past the grain store. He saw the big mural that was painted on the wall of the shop. Then they went past the school, numbered 2229, where kiddie winkles were playing on the monkey bars. Ziggy was beginning to relax.Suddenly, they were at the front gate of the farm. The big sign said, “Welcome to Rose Farm.”Once out of the truck, Ziggy could see the farmhouse and the large paddocks. In the distance, he saw a horse lying under a huge apple tree loaded with red and green apples.The path to the house was lined with pretty red rose bushes. Ziggy was beginning to understand the name Rose Farm.Everyone came out to meet Ziggy. Henry introduced him to Ris the hen and Rocky the rooster, Bella and Jenny, and cheeky Charlie. Ziggy thought it was funny that Charlie had a tin can stuck on one of his horns. The bee family said hello too.Ziggy was surrounded by so many friendly animals.Felix the horse wandered over with a juicy apple and said, “Here, try this. It will be the juiciest apple you have ever had.”After they enjoyed a cup of tea and a sticky bun, Henry showed Ziggy where he would live: a nice barn with fresh hay, and an open paddock with big apple trees. He could share it with Felix and Jenny.Henry said it was time for him to go home to the bakery. He needed a good sleep, as he had a bread delivery early in the morning. But he explained there were so many more new friends to meet, and Henry would tell Ziggy about them the next time he visited Rose Farm.Later that night, when all the excitement had died down, Ziggy relaxed on the hay as he went to sleep.Harry the Hawk saw a sleeping Ziggy, and he had the biggest smile that Harry had ever seen.As Harry flew off into the night sky, he felt happy that Ziggy now lived freely at Rose Farm with many new friends. Harry was certain that he would visit often, but for now, he would soar through the sky looking for new adventures.
