This week, the residence beside St Thomas’s Church was reduced to a pile of timber and rubble. I believe that was the only option. Hence, another familiar piece of Bunyip’s history quietly disappears from the landscape. For generations, nervous brides and grooms sat in the rectory’s office to meet Reverends, Fathers, or in my case, Archdeacon James Knife, to plan their weddings, or sadly, to arrange farewells for family members who had passed. It was home to St Thomas’s clergy and their families over many years. Though it is now gone and the block is being cleared for new homes, its story remains woven into the history of the church and the town itself. Buildings may disappear, but memories have a way of lingering long after the walls are gone. Did you too sit in that Rectory’s office? I know a few that did.
