Remembering Bunyip’s Main Street history
Pound and Ure
Back in 1936, along Main Street Bunyip, there stood a little shop owned by a kind and caring man named Hugh Pound… for this story we shall call him Hughie. Hughie’s shop was a curious place.Inside, you could find radios, bicycles, and the occasional white goods, all lined up neatly waiting for customers, Hughie loved paying with the radio’s Bunyip was a simple town back then.People didn’t rush for new things. They were happy with what they had.Ice still came in solid blocks from the iceworks down on Garfield Road, and most homes were fine without anything fancy ,  the shop was often quiet.

Hughie didn’t mind one bit.

Day after day, year after year, he would open his doors, sweep the front step, and sit with a smile, listening to the radio that was playing on the corner bench .He was happy. Then, in September 56 , something quite extraordinary arrived…The black and white television. At first, people weren’t quite sure what to make of it.“A box with moving pictures?” they would peer in through Hughie’s window.curiosity is a wonderful thing. Bit by bit they wanted one too, By 1958, the shop was no longer quiet. It was busy, Families gathered, children wanted to just to catch a glimpse of the flickering screen.Hughie could hardly keep up.Radios were selling, televisions were flying out the door, and bicycles leaned waiting as customers filled the shop. For the first time in many years, Hughie felt rushed… and was just a little bit overwhelmed. That’s when Petey came along.Petey was quick on his feet and full of good sense.Where Hughie was calm and steady, Petey was lively and sharp.

And together… they worked well.  From that day on, Hughie’s little shop on Main Street was no longer just a shop. It became a place to visit,

And as the years rolled on,the name Pound and Ure was known , A quiet shop, a big change and a Main Street full of memories. Thank you Mr Philip Hugh Pound #lovealwayshenry♥️
