 The Milk Bar Days
17 Main Street, Bunyip, has had a wonderful history.
Over the years, the building has been many things—a milk bar,a supermarket,a homewares shop,a patchwork and craft shop,a gym centre, and even a wellness café. And many more Too many different businesses to write about…that would test my memory far too much.So today, we shall remember it as the Bunyip milk bar.

A place run by many folk over the years, including the Kealys, the Lees, and the Ockwells—just to name just a few.

Back in those day , the door would always be open, a busy shop with everything Looking at all those lollies, mates, liquorice, red skins, little white fags( Fads) , bubble gum, sherbets…and so many more. The list was long… and the choices were even harder.

You’d stand there for what felt like forever, carefully deciding, coin in hand—“I’ll have two of those… and maybe two of those…”Sometimes it was two for a cent, and every choice mattered.

And then… there were the milkshakes.cold, and made fresh behind the counter, mixed in metal cups and poured into glass or paper cups, with flavours like chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and lime.
Behind the counter, there was often a familiar young face, sometimes a local boy  or girl, working after school,

For many of those it was their first job.

Their first pay. Their first taste of responsibility.

There were ice creams to choose from,

newspapers to flick through, and always something tucked away on the shelf that you didn’t know you needed… until you saw it.Salad rolls and more, Locals would stop by for a chat,It was never just a shop.

And though the building has changed many times since, those milk bar days are remembered. And if you look closely…you might just imagine a happy kid  with a small bag of lollies in one hand…and a milkshake in the other.Happy Saturday everyone ☕️
