Remembering the Bunyip Pet Show — “Pee Wee” the Rooster 🐓🐾Today’s story is about a pet show.
But firstly, we remember 11–13 High Street, Bunyip, a property now on the real estate market with quite a valuable price tag.If only walls could talk.
The memories of a home are often far more valuable than the property itself. In years gone by, and more recently, we remember Karen with her Health and Wellness business, naturopath Rob, and our dear Vonnie, who lived there with Ray and perhaps a greyhound too. But before those days,
our story takes us back sixty years, when I was a six-year-old girl.
We shall call this story: Remembering the Bunyip Pet Show — “Pee Wee” the Rooster 🐓🐾 Around sixty years ago, a pet show, arranged by Ethel and her friends, was held at the Emms family home in High Street on a Monday afternoon in aid of “Pee Wee” the rooster and the local Bunyip and Warragul Hospitals Appeal.
A Monday, you might say?
In 1966, school terms were set out quite differently, with only three terms each year. This particular Monday fell during the school holidays. That weekend, the children carefully washed, brushed, and groomed their pets so they would look their very best for the big day.
Looking through the old newspaper clipping in Mum’s book has brought back many memories and many familiar names. We all won awards. Kerry, Don, and I entered our cats. Sorry, Puss, I cannot remember your name. Raymond, Barbara, Mark, Debra, and Keith entered dogs. And, of course, there were guinea pigs and rabbits. Keith, Don, and I all won ribbons.
Then there were the birds too. Ken Phillips, Peter, and Marshall all had birds. 🦅 But special awards went to several young pet owners.
Little Mark had the smallest pet — a tiny three-week-old puppy. Glenn’s dog, “Whisky”, was named the largest pet. Phillip, or “Frog” as he was known, had perhaps the most unusual pet of all — “Henry” the tortoise. Yes, Henry was a tortoise! 🐢 Marshall’s rabbit, “Frosty”, won Best Groomed Pet. And “Snow” the dove, belonging to Ken, was voted the Most Popular Pet. 🕊️ What a wonderful day it was, with our pets all gathered together in High Street for a special rooster named Pee Wee. Great memories of a wonderful time If you see your name tag your self
