Lucy the Lighthouse
Long ago, high on the cliffs of Cape Schanck, stood a lighthouse called Lucy.
By day she watched children laugh, families picnic, and seabirds dance on the breeze.
By night she shone her great light across Bass Strait, helping ships find their way home.
Lucy had seen thousands of sunrises.
She had watched gentle seas, wild storms, whales, dolphins and countless ships.
But one day, many years ago, actually in 1969 she saw something she would never forget.
A little girl was visiting with her family.
She was full of excitement, looking at the waves below.
Then… she slipped.
Down the steep path she tumbled.
Lucy wished she could reach out and catch her.
Instead, she did the only thing she could.
She stood strong, shining brightly over the cliffs, hoping everything would be all right.
Thankfully, the little girl was safe.
Years passed.
The little girl grew up.
She never forgot Lucy.
And Lucy never forgot her either.
Every evening, as her light swept across the sea, Lucy smiled.
“Sometimes,” she whispered, “we all have a tumble in life. But just like a lighthouse, we can stand tall again, shine brightly, and help others find their way.”
