A Very Wet Sunday at the Pictures
It was on a very wet Sunday that we pedalled our bicycles to Garfield.
We were going to the Garfield Picture Theatre to watch the classic 1961 World War II epic film The Guns of Navarone, adapted from the bestselling 1957 novel by Scottish author Alistair MacLean.
The film had some very famous stars, including Gregory Peck, David Niven, Irene Papas, Gia Scala, Stanley Baker and many more.
For a kid, it was an exciting movie — and that day we even had nature providing its own sound effects! Claps of thunder and heavy rain outside seemed to add to all the action happening on the big screen.
When the movie was over, we still had to pedal our bicycles all the way home through the rain. That was certainly a challenge!
But after a change into dry clothes and a lovely warm Milo, we could look back and say we had had a great day.
And all these years later, the memory is still fresh — a wet Sunday, a bicycle ride, a great movie and the Garfield Picture Theatre.
