Today’s story is touched by sadness, as we remember the people we have loved—family members, friends, and others we knew while growing up.
Today, we are thinking of a dear man, Des Heatley, who passed away this week. We fondly remember his time as Bunyip Cemetery’s gardener. Des and his best friend, his beloved wife Lisa worked side by side for many years, tending the roses, caring for the garden beds, looking after the memorials, and doing whatever needed attention to keep the cemetery looking beautiful.
Over many generations, caring hands have tended the cemetery. They have mown the lawns, pruned the roses, and cared for the resting places of our families, friends, and pioneers.
The Bunyip Cemetery dates back 132 years, with the first official burial taking place on 18 March 1894. At that time, the cemetery covered about 10 acres, and the very first burial was six-year-old William Henry Barnes.
The first trustees of the cemetery included names such as Webb, Finch, Mortimer, Archer, Hansen, Gillespie, and Reynolds. These families are closely connected to Bunyip’s rich history.
Today, we remember the Heatley family with love.
Our deepest sympathy goes to them all, especially Lisa and her children.
As we leave the cemetery today, let us not only remember those who rest there, but also the kind people who have lovingly cared for this peaceful place over the generations.
May the roses continue to bloom, the lawns remain green, and the stories of those who came before us never be forgotten.
