Bunyip’s Bills Horse Trough

Bunyip is fortunate to have one of the historic Bills horse troughs, a man-made watering basin designed to provide relief for working horses.

A Gift for Working Horses

Between the 1900s and 1930s, philanthropists Annis and George Bills distributed more than 700 concrete troughs across Australia and overseas. Each trough followed the same design and carried the inscription, “Donated by Annis and George Bills.

George Bills made his fortune manufacturing wire mattresses and was a passionate advocate for animal welfare. When he died in 1927, approximately £86,000 was left in trust for the construction and maintenance of horse troughs.

It is wonderful that Bunyip still has one of these troughs as a reminder of the Bills’ generosity and care for working animals.

Thank you, George and Annis Bills.
